BALE

Aesir seemed convinced it would be a day’s journey to the other side of the Derefter Wall. He found a sconce on the wall and lit it, illuminating their way through the tunnel of ice. Though the Imperial Ranger kept his cloak wrapped tight over him, the temperatures were far warmer to Skálda in here without the Naüthe’s windchill. She let out a breath of respite.

They passed enthralling landscapes—crystal ceilings patterned like sea waves, caverns with icicles longer than Crixalas’s fangs, even an old ice sculpture carved like a dragon. Temporarily, Skálda forgot her troubles and soaked in the natural wonders. The elf was as awed as her, or at least he pretended it well for her.

Toward the end of that day, Skálda relented. “What is your question?”

“Hmm?”

“Your tongue has been twitching all day.”

“You bespelled Crix… and he could do nothing against it.”

“I borrowed the spell from you.”

“I could not have held a grown dragon in the air like that. I do not have the reserves…” Aesir sidestepped rubble. “Not besides, I have never seen a layman cast a spell without studying under a mage. My first spell came only after three solstices of tutelage.”

“I have an affinity.” It was haunting to finally admit it aloud. Kael had an affinity, and the Republic would have arrested him.

“Who taught you?”

“No one.” It had come to her so naturally, and only through the extreme pressures of necessity. Had she not been forced to watch another dragon nearly devour hers, she might never have become aware of her propensity for magic.

Skálda kept walking, but he caught her by the shoulder. She twisted herself free, burning him with her irked stare.

“Before we emerge from this garrison, we must discuss this. A great deal of dangers surround the Magia. It’s impossible you would know how to cast a spell unless someone taught you.”

“I told you—”

“It requires the knowledge of what to look for, a gift for being able to see and feel what the common eye cannot…”

The deeper part of her could not deny how good it had felt to draw that power; she needed to learn more. Skálda crossed her arms. “Alright, elf. Tell me about it. How do I draw spells?”

“Do you think me a fool?”

“You started the topic.”

“It’s against Republic law to teach spells to humans.”

“I’m not going to the Arcaenum.”

“No, but any human who practices magic on Elondria is a rogue. Have you forgotten what I am?” At her glower, he said, “I was bred to hunt kvael.”

“I don’t see why it’s such a big affair.”

“You are a human affinite, Skálda. One who can draw from the Rhún, the source of all magic and life.” He rubbed the back of his neck. “Yours is a rare gift. It comes to High Elves naturally. But one in one hundred thousand men has an affinity to cast magic.”

“Builders can. Anders told me after Ealdorman rank, most of them can start drawing Dragonspells. Or isn’t it true?”

Aesir shook his head. “Dragonspells are not the same thing as the Magia.
